Richard has considerable experience in many fields of public and commercial law, including in particular the areas of Government regulation, Government and corporate restructuring, privatisation, companies, securities, and superannuation. He has drafted, and advised on, numerous Acts and regulations, codes, contracts, deeds, company constitutions, prospectuses, trust deeds, and other documents of many kinds.

Richard was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 2002. He was a senior commercial partner in Chapman Tripp from 1986 to 1999, and prior to that was a commercial partner in Rudd, Watts and Stone for 4 years and a New Zealand Parliamentary Counsel for 6 years.

Richard was a member of the Government appointed Contracts and Commercial Law Reform Committee (early 1980s), Working Group on Investment Products and Adviser Disclosure (1993-95), and the New Zealand Law Commission (2003-05). He was also chairman of the Legislation Advisory Committee appointed by the Minister of Justice from1999 to 2004.
